Parent Information

Welcome to Yavapai College!

Most students will experience academic and social transitions as they start college. Positive experiences and supportive relationships are critical to their success. The Academic Advising Office is committed to providing the support and relevant success strategies your child will need to reach her or his educational goals.

Academic Advising

The Academic Advising Office is staffed by master’s level professional advisors that help students with the following:

  • Assess their strengths, interests, and skills.
  • Clarify their career and life goals.
  • Develop educational plans to realize their career and life goals.
  • Become aware of and utilize college resources.
  • Teach college success strategies.
  • Become knowledgeable of college policies and procedures.
  • Reflect upon their learning.
  • Successfully transition into, through, and out of college.

College Expectations

Most students find college to be a more demanding environment than their previous educational experience. Students will need to spend 2 hours per week doing homework/preparing for class for each 1 credit of course load. A typical 15 credit hour academic load will require a 45 hour per week commitment to school to attain educational success at Yavapai College. College expectations including the following:

  • Students are expected to take responsibility for what they do and don’t do, as well as the consequences that come with those decisions.
  • It is up to the student to read and understand assigned material.
  • College is a learning environment in which students will need to critically evaluate and apply what they have learned.

What Records do I Have Access to as a Parent?

As a parent you may want to receive certain information concerning your child. Please be aware that federal law prohibits us from sharing certain information about your child. Please see the FERPA Privacy Act information below. We will make every effort to answer your questions without being in violation of the law.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 - “FERPA”:

FERPA is a federal law that deals specifically with the education records of students who attend a post-secondary institution, such as Yavapai College. It provides the following rights to the student:

  • Right to inspect and review education records;
  • Right to seek to amend education records;
  • Right to have some control over the disclosure of information from educational records.

Yavapai College is very conservative in our treatment of student records within the parameters of FERPA:

  • Students must present a picture ID to receive a copy of their class schedule or an unofficial transcript.
  • Written requests to disclose student records must include the student’s signature. (Request for an official transcript, for example.)
  • We do not generally respond to phone requests for information.

What does all of this mean to parents?

Following are options for parents who wish to view their student’s records:

  • The best scenario is for the student to provide information to parents. Students can provide a class schedule, grade report, unofficial transcript, etc., directly to the parent.
  • Students can sign a Student Statement of Consent to Disclose to the parents (available through the Registration Office and kept on file in the same office). This allows us to release information directly to the parent.
  • Parents can establish the dependency relationship of the student through the Registration Office, and then request information from us. This is the least convenient option.
  • Online access through Electronic Student Services is available to students, and confidentiality is provided through PIN access.
    Class schedules, grades, transcripts are available 24/7. Click here for ESS login page.

A picture ID is required for in-person requests; the student’s signature is required on written requests.
