SLOA Committee

SLOA is a standing Faculty Association committee. Each academic area/division dean appoints a representative. Other committee members include professional staff and students.

Mission and Purpose

Mission:

The mission of the SLOA committee, in cooperation with the Office of Academic Affairs, is to support quality student learning and to foster excellence in instruction by establishing and maintaining a culture of assessment and improvement at the course, program, and institutional levels. The basic premise of SLOA is “assessment for improving student learning.”

Purpose:

The purpose of the SLOA Committee is to design, review, and recommend student outcome assessment procedures and activities that are consistent with YC and academic program goals.

SLOA’s primary objectives and responsibilities are to...

  1. To work with academic divisions and programs to develop and implement plans for student learning outcomes assessment to improve curriculum and instruction at the course and program levels.
  2. To review, develop, and recommend institutional assessment procedures and policies.
  3. To review assessment strategies, reporting strategies, and feedback processes.
  4. To work in cooperation with the Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Senate to:
    1. familiarize YC faculty with the uses of assessment to strengthen student learning.
    2. familiarize YC faculty with issues and strategies of assessment.
    3. Review assessment data and identify trends.
    4. Facilitate periodic evaluation of the academic assessment effort at YC.
    5. advise Faculty Senate on matters related to assessment of student learning.
  5. Maintain copies of outcome assessment plans, and share SLOA minutes with the Faculty Association Secretary to post on BlackBoard site.
