Arts and Humanities Area Values

Humanities area studies courses at Yavapai College reflect the values and guidelines for general education and, in addition, commit students and faculty to recognize and acknowledge the importance of:

  1. awareness and understanding of the arts and humanities in cultural and historical contexts;
  2. the importance of recognizing significant and representative works;
  3. critical reasoning skills as they apply to humanistic endeavors;
  4. humanistic insights and understanding how they impact people and the world;
  5. curiosity and empathy

Yavapai College Arts and Humanities Area Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the required number of courses in the Arts and Humanities Area List, the learner will be able to:

  1. classify concepts and/or artifacts within their historical and/or stylistic contexts;
  2. analyze influences such as historical, political, economic, social, cultural, spiritual, environmental and other factors as they affect the development of arts and humanities;
  3. define and use key terms within the appropriate discipline;
  4. formulate and support personal and reasonable positions on issues relevant to the specific discipline;
  5. engage in dialectic discussions that exhibit evidence of intellectual curiosity and scholarship;
  6. identify, compare and critique major contributors and contributions to the arts and humanities.

Yavapai College Arts and Humanities Area Criteria

The above values will engendered through activities that include the following:

  • frequent discussion, allowing students to engage in critical communication;
  • substantial reading , including examination of primary materials and library research;
  • research that enhances and develops life-long independent learning skills.
  • a minimum of 1500 written evaluated words for 100-level course and 2500 evaluated written words for 200-level courses through pre-assigned writings tasks, essay examinations, and/or journals and research papers
