General Education Core Curriculum

Yavapai College General Education Values

The General Education Curriculum at Yavapai College commits students and faculty to:

  1. seek a coherent center of values and an integrated understanding of the cultural, social and physical environments;
  2. cultivate integrity, courage, curiosity and empathy in the pursuit of knowledge;
  3. examine whether their work can sustain community and environment over time;
  4. connect with the heritage of human understanding by examining issues of universal concern (global, ethical, intellectual, spiritual, aesthetic, scientific, economic, political);
  5. explore alternative ways of perceiving and knowing through a variety of conceptual frameworks that thinkers, cultures, and academic disciplines may use to approach issues;
  6. comprehend problems and issues of diversity;
  7. develop the insights, connections, and awareness that are desirable and necessary for educated discourse;
  8. exercise critical thinking skills including analysis, reflection, interpretation, evaluation, and synthesis;
  9. apply critical thinking skills to educated discourse, holistic problem solving, and effective communication;
  10. know one’s strengths and weaknesses as a communicator, and use communication to enhance self-esteem, self-management, and ethical communication;
  11. integrate different theories or different branches of knowledge, especially the physical, biological and social sciences and humanities;
  12. accept dissonance in values clarification and intellectual exchange as a constructive element in the learning process;
  13. locate, evaluate, and effectively use the information required in the courses in the curriculum.

Yavapai College General Education Outcomes

Upon completion of their AGEC at Yavapai College, the successful student will be able to:

  1. differentiate, synthesize and integrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired;
  2. reflect upon and evaluate their commitment to the General Education Values;
  3. apply information literacy skills to the development, evaluation, and use of information;
  4. use reading, writing, listening and speaking as modes of discovery, reflection, understanding and sustained, disciplined reasoning;
  5. engage in independent learning.

Yavapai College Criteria for General Education Courses

General Education courses at Yavapai College are:

  • transferable to all community colleges and public universities in Arizona as part of the Arizona General Education Core;
  • devoted to the enhancement of students’ competent, thoughtful and precise writing, critical reading, and oral discourse.
