Ethnic, Race, and Gender Awareness Values
Ethnic, Race, and Gender Awareness Courses at Yavapai College reflect the values and guidelines for general education and, in addition, commit students and faculty to recognize and acknowledge the importance of:
- an awareness of the problems and issues of human diversity;
- empathy in exploring human diversity;
- dissonance as a constructive element in the process of learning about human diversity;
- a personal body of knowledge to assist them in comprehending diversity problems and issues;
- discipline-specific perspectives of race/ethnicity and/or gender.
Yavapai College General Education Ethnic, Race, and Gender Awareness Courses Outcomes
Upon successful completion of study of courses dealing with race, ethnicity, and gender awareness, the learner will be able to:
- define and differentiate the concepts and issues of culture, ethnicity/race, and/or gender;
- identify the ways in which human diversity (e.g., gender and/or race/ethnicity) informs discipline-specific perspectives;
- explain historically changing perspectives concerning gender and/or race/ethnicity;
- analyze the ways in which differing attitudes, values and expectations (by gender, race/ethnicity) affect social interactions and experiences;
- evaluate the ways in which prejudice/discrimination perpetuates social inequalities by gender and/or race/ethnicity;

- mploy tools of discipline-specific scholarship (thoughtful and precise writing, critical reading, independent thinking and intelligent discourse in the communication of issues of race/ethnicity and/or gender.
