Yavapai College Information Literacy Core Competency
Information Literacy Values
Courses that enable and enrich students’ information literacy at Yavapai College reflect the values and guidelines for general education and, in addition, commit students and faculty to recognize and acknowledge that:
- information plays a key role in building knowledge in all subject areas;
- there is a need for information, which involves an intellectual realization of when information is missing;
- information has a role in brining understanding in all areas of a democratic society;
- information is used to show relationships between issues, discover new ideas, establish facts, resolve questions, develop insights, and make decisions;
- information comes in a great many forms and requires evaluation for relevance, veracity, and appropriateness.
Information Literacy Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the AGEC, Yavapai College students will be able to:
- determine the nature and extent of the information needed;
- access information efficiently;
- critically evaluate information and its sources
- incorporate selected information into their knowledge base and value system;
- use information to accomplish a specific purpose;
- access and use information ethically and legally.
Information Literacy Criteria
Instruction pertaining to information literacy will be integrated across the curriculum.
The ACRL Standards for information literacy (Association of College & Research Libraries) is the source for Yavapai College AGEC’s information literacy outcomes.
