Developmental Education at Yavapai College

Definition/Purpose

Developmental Education is the "practice and research within higher education...to promote the cognitive and affective growth of all passed learners" by "addressing the individual differences and unique needs among learners." (National Association of Developmental Education website)

The Developmental Education Program places the learner at the center of a process that determines where students are, where they want and need to go educationally, and what can help them reach those goals. The Program provides coordination of the many instruction and student services to address the developmental needs of our students.

Mission

The Developmental Education Program offers the instruction and support students need to develop the foundation of academic skills and thinking processes that are essential for successful completion of college-level work.

Objectives

The Developmental Education Program works in partnership with academic departments and service programs to assure that students will:

  • Identify and use college procedures and resources.
  • Set and evaluate personal educational and career goals.
  • Develop entry-level college proficiency in mathematics and in English language, reading writing, and other communication skills.
  • Identify and apply personally effective group and independent study strategies.
  • Apply basic research and technology skills.
