The College maintains an annual schedule to meet the needs of the students served by the district. As part of that schedule, the College has developed regular working hours, conforming to federal and state mandates regarding employee work hours and pay. Flexible work scheduling is encouraged to accommodate operational needs of the College and employee needs.
Full-time operating staff work a regular schedule of either 37 or 40 hours, and are paid according to the hours that they work. Professional staff, administration, full-time faculty and adjunct faculty are paid by the professional obligation that they are assigned and do not have specific hours of work designated. Employees working the full day should receive, at minimum, one-half hour lunch. In settings where operating staff and student employees cannot leave their work area, they should be afforded one 20-minute break for each three and one-half hours of work.
Operating staff working assigned shifts, which include a minimum of four hours scheduled work after 9:00 p.m. or before 8:00 a.m., are eligible for shift differential at the following rates: 5% over normal day shift rate for 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight; 10% over normal day shift rate for 12:00 midnight to 8:00 a.m. Shift differential applies to all hours worked during these periods.
Operating staff will be given compensatory time at the rate of one and one-half hours earned for every hour worked over forty in the week. On an exception basis, supervisors may provide employees with pay at the rate of one and one-half hours for every hour worked over forty in the week in lieu of the compensatory time. All overtime must be authorized in advance by the supervisor. Compensatory time earned will not exceed two hundred forty hours. The employee may request compensatory time off within a reasonable time. Unless the time off is unduly disruptive, it will be allowed.
Arrangements may also be made between the supervisor and operating staff employee to rearrange the normal work hours of the week to meet the operational needs of the department and the personal needs of the employee. Hours taken by the employee prior to exceeding the normal hours to be worked during the pay period are called “flex time.” Flextime hours are made up during the pay period on an hour for hour basis.
Student employees may work a maximum of 25 hours per week while school is in session during the fall and spring semesters. They may work full time at any other time. All overtime must be authorized in advance by the employee’s supervisor. Students will be paid at the rate of one and one-half hours for every hour worked over forty in the week.
