Position Classification and Salary Reviews

Classification and Salary Reviews

These procedures were approved by the President's Leadership Team on June 19, 2007

Staff positions at Yavapai College are scheduled for classification and salary market review approximately every three years. This is accomplished by reviewing one third of the colleges staff positions each year. Positions are divided into three groups by title and grade. The grades fall approximately as follows:

To be considered for reclassification review any position must be in the scheduled group of positions to be reviewed. To be considered for reclassification resulting in a change in grade/salary range, job family or compensation level, at least one of the following must be true:

  • The market for the type and scope of work must have changed greater than 10%
  • There must be a demonstrated major change in position scope and responsibilities resulting from new work coming to the college. Increases in volume of work do not qualify as compensable changes in scope and responsibility.
  • For reorganizations and/or redistributions of work causing increases in position scope and responsibilities - salary and grade increases to be considered only with commensurate reduction in salary and grade to position(s) previously responsible for the work.

Comparison Markets

For purposes of Market Pricing Positions, Yavapai College will use the following sources for comparative salary data.   Each position is compared to positions of similar scope and responsibility in the market place.

Grades 1-8

- Local city, town, and county positions of similar scope.

- Service Area Review Benchmark schools and other AZ community Colleges.

Grades 9-11

- Local city, town, and county positions of similar scope.

- Service Area Review Benchmark schools and other AZ community Colleges.

- College and University Professional Association (CUPA) data for 39 regional colleges of Similar size and Scope.

Grades 12 and higher

- Service Area Review Benchmark schools and other AZ community Colleges.

- College and University Professional Association (CUPA) data for 39 regional colleges of Similar size and Scope.

- as necessary, CUPA National level community colleges of similar size and scope.

Off Cycle Reviews

Generally speaking, positions will not be reviewed between the scheduled review periods. Employees may not request their own reclassification review. The Director, Human Resources or a Vice President may request Human Resources to review the classification of any position, subject to the following criteria:

  • To be considered for a reclassification, a Major change in position scope and responsibilities resulting from new work coming to the college is required.

The classification decision made by Human Resource is not subject to the College grievance procedure.
