Masters degree required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; masters level degree preferred.

Minimum of two years of experience required in the area of specialty; four or more years required at the highest complexity level

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Student Information Systems software; Database software; Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

Requires influencing and project management of others within the same and other departments to accomplish responsibilities; requires moderate external contact and influencing

Supervisory Impact

May have lead and/or supervisory responsibility over other employees. Carries out lead/supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Representative Duties:

  • Participates in the academic advising of students including providing four-year university transfer information, selecting courses, providing information about academic degrees and college services and developing of educational plans.
  • Analyzes information about individuals through interviews, test and records to appraise their interests and abilities.
  • Coordinates academic advising activities with other offices, departments, centers and campuses.
  • Conducts new student orientation, workshops and training programs.
  • Helps students with adjustment to college life and/or refers students to campus or community resources as needed.
  • Provides career counseling including decision-making, values clarification and career exploration.
  • Administers and interprets career and assessment instruments.
  • Assist with college-related community outreach, networking, and recruiting students.
  • Participates in professional development to enhance counseling and instructional skills.
  • Serves as a liaison to faculty and staff members. Participates on college committees as needed.
  • Complies with all applicable regulations, policies, and established work practices.

  • Presentation Skills - Able to make formal presentations that are more broadly based and complex. Can present to all levels of the organization within the scope of expertise. Skilled in the use of various presentation tools including multi-media.
  • Written Communication Skills - Can produce clear and strong messages that are understood by diverse audiences. Effectively communicates the issues that are complex in nature verbally and in writing. Reviews and edits written work constructively.
  • Leadership Skills - Actively assists with daily allocations of resources and coordinates activities. Takes responsibility for transferring knowledge to others in the workgroup. Overseas individual or multiple functions within a workgroup.
