Division Assistant Dean

Duties:

This is a list of Essential Duties, which are intended to reflect the nature of the work being performed. This is not a complete list of job responsibilities for this position. For further information on this position, consult the supervisor.

The Assistant Dean serves as the instructional leader of academic units and reports to the campus Executive Dean. The Assistant Dean is responsible for the following essential duties:

1. Plans and performs regular instructional teaching duties.

2. Forecasts division budgetary needs, represents the division in the district budget-building process, and manages the division budget.

3. Serves as a master teacher for division faculty including the coaching of new faculty, directing instructional improvement plans, and planning professional development opportunities for all division adjunct and full-time faculty and staff.

4. Provides instructional leadership in curriculum development and maintenance, assessment of student learning outcomes, articulation with other institutions, and program review.

5. Promotes instructional innovation through alternative delivery strategies, creative instructional techniques, and technological experimentation.

6. Manages faculty workloads including contractual duties and extra-institutional assignments.

7. Ensures division compliance with all program and institutional accreditation standards and when applicable, external regulatory and accreditation standards.

8. Manages faculty issues to ensure the highest level of academic integrity and professionalism.

9. Directs division enrollment management initiatives including student recruitment, student retention, course/program marketing, and community outreach.

10. Performs ongoing instructional operations including schedule building, faculty payroll processing, and resource management.

11. Manages the division office and facilities including faculty offices, classrooms, and laboratories to ensure a safe, user-friendly environment for faculty, staff, students, and the general public.

12. Manages grants and partnerships with other institutions, agencies, or organizations as they relate to division instructional and outreach activities.

13. Serves as the instructional liaison for the division in district-wide planning processes.

14. Mediates conflicts involving faculty, staff, and students within the division.

15. Provides leadership in hiring, retaining, and terminating division faculty and staff, supervising division faculty and staff, an evaluating division faculty and staff.

16. Supports academic advising and career counseling initiatives to insure that students receive necessary information and guidance.

17. Directs division participation in the district governance process including representation on regular committees, assignment to special task forces, and preparation of special reports.

18. Manages division personnel and operations in compliance with college policy.

19. Promotes diversity in the faculty and staff hiring process, recruitment of prospective students, and outreach initiatives.

20. Responsible for providing relevant components of faculty job descriptions and requirements within his/her academic unit.

21. Other duties as assigned.

Decision Making

This position must function with minimal supervision to promote, implement and manage the academic mission of the College as approved by the Board of Governors, President and appropriate governance units or designees. It is accountable to its supervision as designated by the president.

FLSA Status

This position is seen as being “exempt” to the rules and regulations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. As such, the incumbent is paid by the responsibilities assumed, not by the number of hours worked. This position is paid at a straight salary rate.
