Database Administrator

Organizes and integrates planning and execution of activities around a specific program or function; may assist to develop and administer budget.
Works within a specific area requiring a specialized body of knowledge; requires an understanding of internal and external procedures and policies to produce end results
Undergraduate degree required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; masters level degree preferred.
Minimum of two years of experience required in the area of specialty; four or more years required at the highest complexity level
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of current enterprise style database versions of Oracle, Peoplesoft, Sybase, Informix, Structured Query Language (SQL) or MS/SQL; database design and database development tools; relational database structure and data normalization; operating systems (i.e., Windows NT, Unix, VMS); client/server architecture design and implementation; database system installation and maintenance; world wide web (WWW) interfaces to database systems; database security design and implementation.
Requires influencing and project management of others within the same and other departments to accomplish responsibilities; requires moderate external contact and influencing
May have lead responsibility over other employees. Carries out lead responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Develop, implement and maintain database applications and systems.
Administers database systems including monitoring and maintaining database systems and performing tuning and testing; backups and restoration, performance and resource monitoring, troubleshoot technical database problems.
Analyses data requirements from functional specifications.
Analyzes performance of database systems and maintains file structures.
Consults with college departments and IT staff on database design, business requirements, possible solutions, risks and advantages.
Coordinates changes to database architecture.
Coordinates database system performance and space use.
Designs and implements database and operating system security for client and server configurations; set up and maintain security and permissions.
Develops and implements external access to transactions with database systems using application programming interfaces (API) object-oriented language (OO) macros, script/batch language interfaces and electronic commerce solutions.
Develops, installs, monitors, updates and batches custom database applications using enterprise versions of Oracle, Peoplesoft, Sybase, Informix or MS/SQL.
Document database models and data structures.
Interpret documentation and manuals.
Maintains and coordinates data models, dictionaries and other database documentation.
Plans for capacity and growth of new and ongoing systems.
Resolves database problems.
Works with end users to fix bugs.
Install, configure, maintain and support in-house and third party software.
Performs related duties as assigned.
