Faculty Job Description
Duties
This is a list of Essential Duties, which are intended to reflect the nature of the work being performed. These faculty responsibilities are conducted as part of a District-wide team that has an overarching responsibility to continually enhance the college’s effectiveness, as measured by the college’s Community Benefits Statements. This is not a complete list of job responsibilities for this position. For further information on this position, consult the supervisor.
1. Teaching and Learning
- In collaboration with the Division Assistant/Associate Dean and the other full-time faculty in the Department, responsible for reviewing and maintaining the integrity of the curriculum offered by the Division.
- Teach assigned classes in accordance with current course outlines and as outlined in the college’s workload policy.
- Review and update course outlines, text selection and syllabi in cooperation with district/campus/division instructors.
- Propose and develop new courses as appropriate.
- Modify curriculum and/or teaching style based on assessment results and professional development experiences. Document modifications based on assessment results.
- Participate in instructor evaluation, assessment of student academic achievement and demonstrate modification of teaching techniques in accordance with assessment feedback.
- Post and maintain student conference hours as stipulated in current policy. A minimum of nine conference hours are required each week and are subject to the approval of the Division Assistant/Associate Dean and the Chief Academic Officer or designee.
- Establish instructional standards in accordance with College policies and inform students, in writing (syllabi), of such standards and policies.
- Provide support to Division Assistant/Associate Dean in schedule building and budget construction.
- Maintain certificates and/or licenses necessary for employment eligibility.
- Maintain acceptable standards of conduct for the profession, as defined in College policy.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the following applications: word processing, presentation technology, internet search, and electronic mail.
- Other duties to support instruction, as assigned.
2. Professional Development
Professional Development –participate in activities that enhance individual personal and professional growth and renewal. Such activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Maintain an awareness of new instructional technology and advances in teaching and learning theory, and apply where appropriate.
- Acquire new skills for program enhancement and development.
- Participate in evaluative process for self, department, and program.
- Attend and participate in professional development workshops.
- Enroll in appropriate programs of study.
- Participate in activities that promote wellness and physical fitness.
- Hold membership and office in local, state, and national professional organizations.
- Conduct independent professional research or readings beyond that necessary to meet normal course preparation requirements.
3. College/Community Service
College/Community Service -- engage in activities that promote the cohesiveness of the Learning Community or enhance the relationship of the College and the broader community, or a combination of both. Such activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- District, college, and division/department meetings
- District, college, and division/department committee membership
- Curriculum development and instructional innovation
- Student advising
- Mentoring other faculty
- Attend commencement and other college sponsored programs
- Program administration
- Recruiting and marketing
- Networking with professional, business, and community service organizations
- Articulation with local school districts and universities and colleges
- Sponsorship of service learning or internship projects
- Sponsorship of student activities such as clubs and organizations
FLSA Status
This position was reviewed to perform primarily professional duties, requiring a level of expertise attained through years of professional development and/or through an advanced degree. For this reason, this position is seen as being “exempt” to the rules and regulations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. As such, the incumbent is paid by the responsibilities assumed, not by the number of hours worked. This position is paid at a straight salary rate.
