Title / Job Family:

Technician II, Trades

FLSA Status:

Non-Exempt

Role Focus:

Performs intermediate or advanced nonexempt work requiring application of a specific set of skills usually associated with the trades or computer hardware.

Typical Scope:

Works within a specific department but applies skills throughout the college.

Typical Education:

High school diploma or GED required; two years of technical training or college required.

Typical Experience:

Minimum of two years of experience in the trade or technical function; four or more years required at the highest complexity level.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Word Processing software and Spreadsheet software.

Typical Level of Interaction:

Requires tact and courtesy when interacting with others; requires some influencing and work prioritization to accomplish responsibilities across multiple departments.

Supervisory Impact:

May have lead responsibilities; explains procedures and provides departmental information for use by others.

Representative Duties:

The following are examples of typical duties that may be assigned to positions in this job family. It does not imply that all positions within the job family perform all of the duties listed, nor does it necessarily list all possible duties that may be assigned. Other duties may be assigned.

Technician II, Trades: Journeyman level tradesperson. Must possess over five years of qualifying experience, which could include working as an apprentice in the trade. Schooling / certifications in the trade would also qualify as experience.

Performs skilled work at the journeyman level in at least one trade. Performs skilled work in at least one additional trade or has appropriate experience on the job.

Performs journeyman level work in skilled craft such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical or automotive repairs; perform general routine maintenance and repair work on buildings, equipment, and facilities as assigned.

Assess needs for repair and make repairs and corrections to facilities and equipment as required; notify supervisor of required major repairs.

Provide technical guidance to Technician I level personnel.

  • Presentation Skills - Able to make brief and informal group presentations. Skilled in one-on-one presentations. Presents a professional and positive image.
  • Written Communication Skills - Can produce communications that are understood by most people. Avoids too much technical jargon. Can produce memos, letters, etc. with minimum of mistakes.
  • Leadership Skills - Understands expectations for learning additional competencies. Increases the productive capacity of the group by initiating new ideas, processes. Able to assess and use skills of other people.
  • Analytical Skills - Understands where and how to gain access to needed information. Can test validity of perceptions and assumptions on own. Pushes beyond the superficial to identify root causes of problems and situations.
  • Problem Solving Skills - Strong problem resolution skills. Generates varied solutions to problems. Can work within system to get things done quickly. Challenges status quo in a constructive way.
