2.2.1 Employee Classification and Status
Policy: 2.2.1
Title: Employee Classification and Status
Revised Effective Date: 08/05/2008
Scope: All Employee Groups
Employment Categories: All College positions are classified in one of three categories:
- Faculty: positions providing academic instruction and service by teaching credit producing courses, as indicated in the job description
- Staff: support positions providing leadership and management, professional, technical, administrative, clerical and trades work, as indicated in the job description
- Student Employment: support positions available to Yavapai College students meeting the age minimum and taking the required number of credit hours, working a maximum number of hours per week, all as detailed in the Student Employment Handbook for Supervisors, and whose employment is a referral from Student Employment.
FLSA Exemption Status: Positions are classified as either exempt or non-exempt from the overtime compensation provisions of the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act).
Employment Status: Positions may be budgeted as regular, with no defined termination date, or temporary, for definite or particular length of time. The work schedule may be budgeted as full-time, part-time, or variable-time. Positions funded on an annual basis and dependent on federal or state grants, other contracts, or auxiliary revenue sources for continued employment will be further designated as Restricted Positions.
Employment Status by Employee Category: The Human Resources Office is responsible for coordinating and communicating employment categories and FLSA exemption status, while supervisors are responsible for identifying employment status. The combination of employee category, FLSA exemption status, and employment status determines the application of other human resource policies as well as eligibility for benefits.
The following examples are provided to assist in determining the appropriate employment status. In the event that a supervisor is uncertain about the status of a position, the supervisor should contact the Human Resources Department as soon as possible.
Position: Faculty (all are Exempt):
- Regular full-time has no defined termination date, and employees are assigned up to 15-16 load hours per semester (30-32 in a two semester year). Includes those budgeted for one annual appointment only (Limited Term).
- Temporary includes Adjunct, appointed on course-by-course basis, contingent on sufficient enrollment, teaching assigned courses and paid on a per credit or per course basis, assigned up to 9 load hours per semester and Limited Term, one semester appointment only.
Position: Staff (may be exempt or non-exempt)
- Regular full-time: position is expected to be on-going, and has no defined termination date; a normal work week is thirty seven (37) or forty (40) hours per week , or any other full-time work week established as applicable to the position. Includes positions identified for work schedules less than 12 months, most typically 10 months, scheduled to coincide with the academic year.
- Regular part-time: position is expected to be on-going, and has no defined termination date; a normal work week is twenty nine and one-half hours or less per week
- Variable time: position which provides employment for an as-needed number of hours per week
- Temporary full time, part time, or variable time: position is considered of limited duration to fill a defined short term need (initial assignment typically 90 days or less). Hours are dependent on work to be performed.
It is the supervisor’s responsibility to monitor the number of hours worked and length of assignment appropriate for each category.
