Mentoring Program

The Student Support Services Mentoring program pairs second year SSS students with first year SSS students as peer mentors, or it pairs SSS students with Yavapai College faculty for a professional mentor partnership. Mentored students are more likely to stay in school as mentors provide students with personal encouragement, help them navigate the college system and help them solve problems of everyday college life.

Mentors provide a 'safety net' for students who may ...

  • Be confused by the culture, requirements and policies of college
  • Not be receiving emotional support from their family or peers
  • Not be confident enough to ask the necessary questions or track down resources
  • Lack self-esteem or life management skills

Mentor responsibilities include:

  • Listening to the needs of mentees
  • Making appropriate referrals when necessary
  • Being a role model for students who otherwise might not have successful professionals in their life to turn to for advice and counsel
