Checking Browser Settings

Internet Explorer for Windows (5.5 or higher)

Cookies

  1. Click the Tools button on the menu bar at the top of your browser.
  2. Scroll down and click Internet Options.
  3. Select the Security tab. Once in the Security tab, select Custom Level at the bottom of your screen. Scroll down to you get to Java permissions and make sure that High Safety is selected. Scroll down to Scripting of Java applets and make sure that Enable is selected. Scroll down to Active scripting and make sure Enable is selected. If you have changed settings, click OK.
  4. In the Privacy tab, clickAdvanced. Make sure that you select Override automatic cookie handling. You should also select Accept on First-party Cookies and Third-party Cookies. You should also make sure that the security level is selected as Medium.
  5. Next, select the General tab. At the bottom of the dialogue box, click Clear History. In the middle of the dialogue box under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete Files (this is safe for they are temporary files), then click OK.

Security

  1. Click the Tools button on the menu bar at the top of your browser.
  2. Scroll down and click Internet Options.
  3. In the options dialog box, click the Advanced tab at the top of the dialog box.
  4. Scroll down through the selections to the Security area of the index.
  5. Make sure that you check the boxes labeled SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0.

Cache

  1. Click the Tools button on the menu bar at the top of your browser.
  2. Scroll down and click Internet Options.
  3. Select the General tab.
  4. Under the Temporary Internet Files section, click on Settings.
  5. Under Check for newer versions of saved pages, select "Every visit to the page."
  6. Click OK.

Netscape for Windows

Cookies

  1. Click the Edit menu button at the top of your browser window.
  2. Scroll down and click Preferences.
  3. When the Preferences dialogue box opens up, select Advanced (on the left) with your mouse so that it is highlighted.
  4. In the right side of the dialogue box, different options for Cookies will be displayed. Select either "Accept all cookies" or "Accept only cookies that get sent back to the original server." Click OK.
  5. Click the "plus" sign next to the highlighted Advanced option to display a short drop-down list. Select Cache in the list so that it is highlighted. In the right side of the dialogue box, select Clear memory cache. If a message dialogue box opens up say, "This will Remove all Files in Your Memory Cache", click OK. Click OK again to close the dialogue box.

Cache

  1. Click the Edit menu button at the top of your browser window.
  2. Scroll down and click Preferences.
  3. Click the "plus" sign next to Advanced to expand the menu.
  4. Select Cache.
  5. On the lower half of the dialogue box, under "Document in cache is compared to document on network", select "Every time".
  6. Click OK.

Internet Explorer for a Mac

Cookies

  1. Click the Edit menu button at the top of your browser window.
  2. Scroll down and click Preferences.
  3. Scroll down the list on the left and select Cookies so that it is highlighted. On the right side of the dialogue box you will see Cookie Settings. Select either "Never ask" or "Ask for each site".
  4. In the same list up above Cookies, you will see Advanced. Select Advanced so that it is highlighted. In the right side of the dialogue box, there will be settings for History & Cache. Under History settings, click Clear History. Under Cache settings, click Empty now. Click OK. Close your browser and start it again

Security

  1. Select Edit > Preferences.
  2. Click the triangle next to Web Browser to expand the menu.
  3. Select Security Zones.
  4. Under Internet zone, select Medium.

Cache

  1. Select Advanced.
  2. Under Cache, after Update pages select Always.
  3. Click OK.

Netscape for a Mac

Cookies

  1. Click the Edit menu button at the top of your browser window.
  2. Scroll down and click Preferences.
  3. Select Advanced at the bottom of the list with your mouse so that it is highlighted.
  4. With the Advanced option highlighted, different options for Cookies will be displayed. Select either "Accept all cookies" or "Accept only cookies that get sent back to the original server." Click OK.

Cache

  1. Click the Edit menu button at the top of your browser window.
  2. Scroll down and click Preferences.
  3. Click the "plus" sign next to the Advanced option to display a short drop-down list. Select Cache in the list so that it is highlighted. In the right side of the dialogue box, select clear disk cache.
  4. Under "Page in cache is compared to page on network", select "Every Time".
  5. Click OK.

NOTE: If you use AOL or another service that provides a customized browser, you may have trouble altering settings. AOL users often have problems with old screens being displayed from the cache as a result and problems logging in. The best result is to download and configure the latest version of Internet Explorer or Netscape and to use it from your AOL connection rather than the AOL-included browser.
