Scholarships for Instrument

The Yavapai College Instrumental Music Department is pleased to offer scholarships in varying amounts based on the individual student’s musical ability in musical performance, financial need, needs of the ensembles and the number of music classes enrolled. These scholarships are given to help cover the costs of private music lessons, music classes, music books and supplies.

All award candidates require an official application and an audition.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Admitted music majors or minors of Yavapai College and enrollment in the required classes outlined in the student scholarship award letter.
  • Continuing and returning students who have completed at least one semester of music classes or lessons.
  • Community members demonstrating financial need.

Criteria:

A variety of criteria are considered, including the audition, musical background, previous private lessons, honors, contest ratings, experiences, participation in bands and orchestras, SAT/ACT scores, high school or community college GPA, and the results of the placement exams. Non-music major students are also considered for Instrumental Scholarships based on the needs of the performing ensembles and the results of the student’s performance audition.

Departmental Expectations:

All students who hold Instrumental Music Department awards are required to visible participate in the Yavapai College Music Department’s program.

  • You must perform in at least one instrumental ensemble per semester.
  • See Section B of the Scholarship Acceptance Contract as to which classes and ensembles are required.
  • If receiving a lesson scholarship, you must perform in the recital at the end of the semester.

Procedures for Returning Students:

  • Instrumental music scholarships are renewable through graduation. Recipients are expected to maintain high academic and music standards as outlined in the student scholarship award letter.
  • Returning students who have previously received Instrumental Music Department Awards must reapply by submitting an application form by April 25th.

Application Process:

  • Scholarship application forms may be obtained from the Visual and Performing Arts office or the Music Department Office, 1100 E. Sheldon St. Prescott, AZ 86301. You may also download a pdf of the application here.
  • The entrance audition is the single most important factor in determining your admissibility to the YC Music Department. It provides an opportunity for applicants to represent their musical accomplishments and potential as accurately and positively as possible.
  • Auditions for the 2007- 2008 school year will be held on Friday, November 16, 2007 and Friday, April 11, 2008. Students who are unable to audition on those dates can either set up another appointment with Dr. Breiling at (928-776-2004) or by e-mailing Dr. Breiling, or submit an audition tape for consideration.
