Internships - Faculty

Outlined below are the procedures for supervising students through the internship process:

Internship Student Requirements

Students must meet the following requirements to apply for an internship:

  • 2.0 minimum GPA minimum
  • 12 college credits completed
  • Met any internship requirements of their degree/certificate program.

Typically students will have completed the majority of credits towards their degree. The faculty may deny internship placement to any student if they feel the student is not ready to enter the workplace, or the placement does not offer adequate opportunity to fulfill the requirements for Yavapai College credit.

Setting-Up the Internship

When meeting with your student, they should have a determined internship site/employer and a job description or knowledge of the position.

Initial meeting with student to accomplish the following

  • Develop the Student Learning Outcomes for the internship.
  • Outline the Outcome Assessment Measures including a timetable for completion.
  • Fully complete and approve the Internship Study Contract
  • Have Division Assistant / Associate Dean sign the Internship Study Contract.

Student then takes Internship Study Contract to Registrar’s Office to register and pay for the class.

Completing the Internship

Meet with student at least twice during the internship to monitor and evaluate progress. Meetings may be conducted face to face, by telephone, or by email.

  • Provide guidance for successful completion of required assignments.
  • Review any work evaluations from the employer, and discuss these evaluations with the student.
  • Ensure that student has completed the required number of hours/credit (135 hours = 3 credits)
  • Assign a final grade for the course based upon the following:
  1. Accomplishment of the Student Learning Outcomes
  2. Completion of the Outcome Assessment Measures
  3. Any input from the employer evaluation(s)

Report any questions or concerns about internship arrangements, possible OSHA, wage & hour, or other hazards or violations directly to the Career Services Coordinator on your local campus.
