“You can tell a lot about people by how they express their creativity,” Thatcher Bohrman says.

Most folks know Thatcher as Director of the TeLS Department, where he and his staff assist faculty with online learning and educational technology. But he is also an accomplished multi-disciplinary artist, whose works will be featured – with more than a dozen other resident artists – at the YC Staff Art Showcase, opening January 19 at the Prescott Campus Gallery.

Yavapai College’s Org chart is full of talented painters, sculptors and multi-media artists.

Many, like Scott Heide and Saveria Judge, share their skills as technicians and lab assistants in the College’s Fine Arts programs. Others, like Bohrman, balance their artistic and educational pursuits.

“Being a visual artist and being interested in tech is a natural corollary,” he explained. “I’ve always been a computer person. At the University of Wisconsin, I was also into visual arts and dance. This is when they were bringing in a lot of multi-media art. Many of the studio arts works – in videography, multi-media – resemble the things I do now.”

Time has not dimmed Thatcher’s artistic interests. A former Art instructor at the College, his work has previously been exhibited on campus and in the community. He has also collaborated with his wife and family on a variety of video and musical projects, and credits YC’s Art classes for reviving his enthusiasm with the visual form.

“In 2015, I started taking painting classes here again. It’s been great. As soon as I walk into an art room, I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m ready to paint.’ It gives you the extra energy to keep that side going.”

The YC Staff Art Showcase runs through February 17, at the Prescott Campus Gallery. Admission is free. The Gallery will also host an opening reception, Friday, January 26, from 5 -7 p.m., as part of Prescott’s Fourth Friday Artwalk.

The Prescott Campus Gallery is open 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. For a full exhibit schedule or more information, please call: (928) 776.2031 or visit: www.yc.visualarts.com.
