Yavapai College Student Leadership Council

SLC is dedicated to promoting student involvement on all six Yavapai College campuses. It is our goal to empower students, encouraging them to have a voice in their education and their college experience.

Student Leadership Council Purpose Statement:

  1. Develop leadership philosophy/skills on an individual and group level.
  2. Provide opportunities for YC students to voice their ideas and opinions.
  3. Participate in College initiatives by representing YC students.

Why join SLC?

  • Learn essential leadership skills.
  • Participate in teambuilding activities.
  • Learn to design, lead, and complete community service projects.
  • Build your resume and contacts for future employment and educational opportunities.

What role can I play?

  • Serve as a liaison and represent the opinion of all students.
  • Attend on campus leadership classes as possible.
  • Participate on district wide college committees.
  • Attend Leadership conferences when available.
  • Meet with students from other campuses throughout the district.

What can SLC do for me?

In exchange for your service, SLC members will receive reimbursement of up to 12 credit hours and a stipend per semester for a one (1) year commitment.

If you are interested in serving on SLC make sure you meet the following criteria:

  1. Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better.
  2. Make a commitment of at least 2 semesters.
  3. Satisfactorily complete a minimum of 9 credits per a semester.
  4. Be in good standing with Yavapai College and Campus Safety.

SLC members served on a Textbook Study Committee, to review & provide input for lowering textbook costs.

Leadership Training

The Student Leadership Council participates in many forms of professional development as part of their leadership responsibilities.

Recent improvements and activities accomplished by SLC include:
  • SLC is currently addressing lighting concerns on campus.
  • Clothesline Across Campus - Community service project to assist shelters in Yavapai County.
  • Merry Muggers- SLC members collect coffee mugs and toiletries for the needy throughout Yavapai County.
  • SLC implemented a posting board on the Prescott and Verde Valley Campus that encourages free exchange amongst students. SLC is currently expanding this program to other Yavapai campuses.
  • SLC members participate in Constitution Day and assist in district wide student voter registration.
  • SLC members get to participate in leadership development, conferences, and workshops throughout the year. SLC members attended the National Center for Student Leaders Conference in Los Angeles in October 2009.
  • SLC supports student artists through purchases from the YC art gallery. The students' work is then displayed on the Prescott, Prescott Valley, and Verde Valley campuses.
  • SLC members participated in daylong Strategic Planning for the 2009-2010 school year. Current members continue to provide a vital role in Yavapai College Strategic Planning.

Friday campus tours at noon – check in with Registration staff in Building One before noon. NO reservation needed – just show up!
