What is Distance Learning?

Old Dominion University Distance Learning offers day, evening, weekend and online classes. We enable students to continue their education and still meet the demands of family and work. ODU is a renowned leader in distance learning and has expanded course delivery modes, using two-way video, the Internet, CD-ROM, and streaming video, to provide flexibility and extend higher education opportunities to students in Virginia and beyond.

At all site locations, Old Dominion representatives provide students with face-to-face, one-on-one guidance.

Modes of Delivery

1. Satellite Broadcast Courses

1-way Video/2-way Audio; Courses are generally broadcast from the main campus in Norfolk, VA to up to 50 different sites located both inside and outside Virginia.

Students meet in a traditional classroom located at a site where the broadcast is being received, and must be present at that site at the specific class time. In this environment, students are able to see and communicate with both the instructor and other participating students in real time.

2.Video Streamed Courses

Video streaming is a means of delivering a live course to students by computer. Using a computer with high speed internet, students may participate from any location; however, the course is live and does meet at specific class times. Students can view the instructor; however, the instructor cannot view the students.

Interaction takes place in real-time by use of an Internet chat application called Same Time or through a Virtual Instructional Assistant (VIA). Many of our degree programs are offered through video streaming. Refer to our course schedule to identify courses offered in this format.

Video streamed courses are in high demand; therefore students are encourages to register early. To participate in an video streamed course, your computer must meet certain technical requirements, you must have high speed internet access and have an ODU email account. Depending on the course, students may need to download or purchase additional software. Also, please refer to our checklist to insure you understand how video streaming works by accessing the sample courses.

Course examinations, unless otherwise noted, must be proctored.

3. Web Based Classes

Courses are typically asynchronous (available any time, any place). There are no regularly-scheduled class meeting times. Students access the course material from a course web site or a course management system.

Old Dominion uses Blackboard as its primary course management tool. Typically, students can participate from any location. While course material and assignments may have specific completion dead-lines, students can generally work through the course following their own schedules.

To participate in an online course, your computer must meet certain technical requirements, you must have high speed internet access and have an ODU email account. Depending on the course, students may need to download or purchase additional software.

A Computer Compatibility Test and a Computer Skills Self-Assessment are available to help you determine whether or not your computer meets the technical requirements of a typical online course and whether or not you have the computer skills needed to successfully complete a typical online course.

Students taking ODU courses through at the Yavapai College Sites in Arizona pay the Virginia instate undergraduate rate of $249 per credit hour and graduate rate of $358 per credit hour, one of the lowest rates in the state.
