Tutorial Services

College courses may be challenging for a variety of reasons. SSS provides tutorial services to help you gain an extra edge in your coursework. SSS TRIO tutors are trained and certified with the ACLA.

SSS also offers group tutoring in math as well as a HESI study group.  The benefits of tutoring include grade improvement, learning new study skills, and time management.

Tutoring Requirements

Before receiving individualized tutoring, students must first meet with an SSS TRIO program advisor, and be accepted into the program. Then the student who is interested in tutoring may make an appointment to see Sara Holter, the tutorial specialist at the Prescott campus, or, on the Verde, speak with Linda Evans about setting up your tutoring.

Mentoring Program

The Student Support Services Mentoring program pairs second year SSS students with first year SSS students as peer mentors. Mentored students are more likely to stay in school as mentors provide students with personal encouragement, help them navigate the college system and help them solve problems of everyday college life.

Mentors help guide students by ...

  • Helping to understand the culture, requirements, and policies of Yavapai College
  • Figuring out what questions need to be asked
  • Figuring out what resources are available to help ensure academic success
  • Providing emotional support
  • Bolstering student confidence so that student may reach his or her goals
  • Participating in SSS sponsored activities, in order to network with other SSS students

Mentor responsibilities include:

  • Listening to the needs of mentees
  • Making appropriate referrals when necessary
  • Being a role model for students who otherwise might not have people in their life to turn to for advice and counsel

"Thank you to ALL the caring and supporting TRIO members. You guys ROCK as advisors and coaches."
