Why take the skills assessment?

Yavapai College wants you to succeed. Therefore it's important to understand your current level of skill in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Before taking the skills assessment, prospective students must complete the Yavapai College application.

New Student Group Advising

Yavapai College offers a "New Student Group Advising" program to help new students get their college career off to a great start.

This is a FREE program designed to be fun, informative, and provide academic advisement and instructions on how to register for classes. Click here for more information about student group advising.

Prior to attending the New Student Group Advising you must take the reading, writing, and math COMPASS assessments.

Who is required to take the assessment?

  • Enrolling for the first time in English, reading, mathematics, or general ed
  • Enrolling in "essential skills" (developmental) course work

Have you previously taken a placement assessment?

If you have taken a college placement assessment (COMPASS, ASSET, or Accuplacer) elsewhere within the last two years, these may be used for placement.

Have you taken any of these High School tests?

If you have taken the AIMS, SAT, or ACT test within the last two years and have scores at or above the scores listed below, these may be used in place of the COMPASS assessment.

Please fax score reports to (928) 717-7861 with your phone number attached.

  • To meet the Reading Proficiency Requirement: AIMS 705, SAT 400, ACT 17
  • To place into ENG101: SAT 420, ACT 18
  • To place into MAT142,152,187: SAT 530, ACT 22

Are you a distance learner and not able to take the assessment here?

You may be able to assess at another institution near you. Many community colleges will proctor their assessment for a fee to non-students. We will accept mailed, faxed, or emailed copies of COMPASS, Accuplacer, or ASSET score reports from other institutions. Our course placement may differ from those of these institutions.

You may wish to contact us first to locate a COMPASS remote test site. This will allow us to set up the test from our campus. The score report you receive will then have our course placement messages.
