Chemistry

Chemistry courses fulfill general education requirements as well as course requirements for chemistry, biology, geology, physics and other science and engineering majors. Chemistry coursework is required for many medical professional programs. The department offers the full year of general chemistry and the full year of organic chemistry, as well as foundational/preparatory studies in chemistry. Chemistry for Allied Health is and introductory course structured to teach fundamental principles with an emphasis on applications of concern to nursing and other health care professional degree programs.

Students learn the foundational principles of chemistry including laboratory technique and instrumental analysis. Students may pursue independent study chemical research in collaboration with YC and the chemistry departments at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University.

The chemistry department offers students well-equipped laboratories. New facilities include a laboratory fully equipped for organic synthetic work. Department instrumentation includes Flame AA, FTIR, and UV-Visible spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, instrumentation for electrochemical analysis, and computer based data acquisition equipment for the monitoring of temperature, pH, and radioactivity, as well as other analytical methods.

Chemistry courses are offered on the Prescott, Verde, and Chino campuses. Organic chemistry and independent study chemical research is only offered on the Prescott Campus.
