PRESCOTT, AZ – Yavapai College and Yavapai College Foundation today announced the Plant a Vine(yard) event on May 5, 2012 on the Clarkdale campus of Yavapai College. This is a community service event to support the new Viticulture and Enology program at Yavapai College.
Yavapai College currently offers a certificate in Viticulture (grape growing) and will offer a full Viticulture and Enology (wine making) Associates Degree beginning this fall. As part of this program, the college is currently planning to plant 3 acres of vines this year and eventually expand the vineyard to 20 acres.
The YC Foundation has also embarked on a $3 million campaign to build the Southwest Wine Center at Yavapai College. The Center will serve as a hub of education, research and rural economic development activity designed to support a young viticulture industry in achieving its potential as a significant US wine producing region. Areas of the Center include academic programs and a student-run vineyard, a full production teaching winery and a knowledge gateway and repository.
The public is invited to the planting event on May 5 to learn about planting grapes as well as more about the viticulture program and the Southwest Wine Center.
