YC District Governing Board September Meeting Report

The Yavapai College District Governing Board (DGB) covered an array of issues at its monthly meeting on September 11 at Yavapai College in Prescott. The five-member DGB, which is comprised of elected Yavapai County residents from five districts, is responsible for governing on behalf of and is accountable to Yavapai County taxpayers. Board members Dr. Dale Fitzner (president), Dr. Patricia McCarver, Ray Sigafoos and Charles Leon were present at the meeting. Herald Harrington was unable to attend.

Actions taken at the Sept. 11th meeting include:

The Board tabled until its next meeting (October 2, 2012) a discussion of the need to register a vote in a public meeting on the Board’s support for on-campus student housing at the Prescott campus. The discussion was tabled because YC Vice President Clint Ewell, who is responsible for plans to upgrade student housing, could not attend the September meeting due to family commitments.

The Board unanimously passed a motion to approve the amended employment agreement with Yavapai College President Dr. Penelope Wills. The amended contract extends the terms of her contract to June 30, 2015 (was June 30, 2014) and confirms her 2.38 percent total compensation increase for fiscal year 2012-13, which is in alignment with increases received by other Yavapai College employees.

The Board unanimously passed a motion to postpone action on adjustments to a Request for Proposals (RFP) to procure legal services for the DGB.

Announcements included:

Overall enrollment for the Fall 2012 semester is up about 3 percent over the same period last year and is consistent across all age demographics. Enrollment at the Prescott and Verde Valley campuses is down about 9 percent, but enrollment is up significantly for online classes, across all technical education programs, and in the flight training, gunsmithing, administration of justice, Sedona Film School and video game design programs.

The college has created an expanded, detailed and in-depth YC budget page (http://www.yc.edu/v4content/budget/) on the YC website for public consumption. In addition, the college will hold open public forums later this fall for taxpayers to learn more about the college budget.

Yavapai College will play host to the President’s Economic Development Summit on Wednesday, September 19 at the Verde Valley campus in Clarkdale. The summit will bring together economic development organizational leaders and mayors from cities and towns in the Verde Valley and Flagstaff.

The DGB’s November 13th meeting will be held on the Yavapai College Verde Valley campus in conjunction with a public Grand Opening to introduce the public to the many major campus renovations completed over the summer.
