New Radiology Program at YC

Yavapai College’s new Radiology Technology Program will start September 8, 2009. The program will accept applications until Friday, August 28, 2009.
Designed as a two-year Associate’s degree, students will be in the program for a total of six semesters, including two summers, and will carry a full-time course load, according to Richard LeClair, Radiology Technology Program Director. LeClair says that once a student is accepted into the program, they are required to move through the classes with the rest of their cohort. Students will be selected for the program through an application process. LeClair expects the enrollment to be limited to approximately 10 students per year.
While hospitals remain the primary employers for Radiology Technologists, a number of new jobs will be found in physicians’ offices and diagnostic imaging centers.
The nature of the work includes taking x-rays and administering nonradioactive materials into patients’ bloodstreams for diagnostic purposes. These technologists also prepare patients for radiology examinations and ensure physicians’ orders are followed precisely and conform to safety regulations. They may also adjust and maintain equipment, evaluate purchases of equipment, or manage a radiology department.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment to grow faster than average for Radiology Technologists and job opportunities to remain favorable.
The Radiology Technology Program at YC is funded by a grant by the U.S. Department of Labor. The college will follow the guidelines of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians (ARRT) in developing the curriculum. The college will pursue accreditation of the program with the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
