Embedded Tutoring
What is an Embedded Tutor (ET)?
Embedded Tutoring (ET) was developed at the University of Missouri who first developed Supplemental Instruction (SI). After several years offering SI, YC has moved to the Embedded Tutoring model to support a more direct relationship and connection between students and tutors.
The Embedded Tutor (ET) works in the classroom under the instructor's guidance to help students understand course concepts and enhance student engagement.
Embedded tutors provide more individualized attention whether in the WebLive classroom or in completely Online classes where they have a presence in the course via discussion boards. ETs assist to motivate students’ participation and engagement in the course. They may also be asked to reach-out to students who may be struggling.
Other responsibilities of the ET are to:
- Help facilitate small group exercises and/or discussions.
- Offer the perspective of an experienced student in the class.
- Assist students to learn how to effectively utilize software, tools, etc.
- Guide students, provide feedback, and answer questions during in-class, hands-on practice sessions or via discussion boards.
ET Schedule by Courses and Tutor Availability
The Embedded Tutor offers weekly group review, study sessions and individual appointment-based sessions for students enrolled in the class that has an embedded tutor component.
Check the course list under the subjects below to see if your class has an embedded tutor. Your instructor will identify that you have an Embedded Tutor in Canvas and will include the ET’s contact information and schedule of study sessions.

Who are Embedded Tutors?
ETs are students who have successfully completed the course, and want to help others succeed. They attend all classes, take notes, read assigned materials, and prepare activity-based sessions that correspond with the material covered in class. ETs Leaders actively engage students in the learning process and demonstrate effective study strategies that students can apply to any class.
All tutors are required to earn the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Certification as part of their regular duties and to participate in additional tutor and college wide trainings.
What happens in an ET session?
An ET session is a time to interact with other students in the class to better learn, understand, and apply the relevant material by asking questions, comparing notes, and developing study skills. ET sessions are informal; bring your notes, your textbook, and your questions.
Your ET will help you make good use of your study time. Your ET will share with you the strategies he/she used to be successful in the course.
Your ET will not lecture or give you his/her class notes. Your ET will not do your homework or your thinking for you.
How can I attend Embedded Tutoring session?
Attendance is FREE and available to any student who is registered in a ET-supported course. Simply show-up at the specific times and locations as indicated by your ET Leader or contact the Learning Center. Refer to the ET schedule for days and times of tutor availability.
When do Embedded Tutor sessions start?
ET sessions start the very first week of classes and continue throughout the semester. Your ET Leader will keep you informed about the times and locations.
What's in it for me?
If you attend ET sessions regularly, chances are you’ll earn a better grade. Research indicates that students who attend ET sessions on a regular basis earn half to a whole letter grade higher than students who do not attend ET sessions.
Become an Embedded Tutor (ET)
Applications for Embedded Tutors are accepted throughout the school year. We are currently seeking individuals with strong interpersonal communication skills who are willing to assist a diverse group of students. SIET Leaders must have completed the prospective ET course(s) with a grade of B or higher, have a cumulative 3.0 GPA, and have a faculty recommendation.
