Education Now! - Scholarship fund removes financial roadblocks for Yavapai County students
Last updated: 11/16/2016 4:41:24 PM
Since its inception in 2007, the Yavapai College Education Now! Scholarship Fund has helped 30 Yavapai County high school students avoid financial roadblocks on the road to and through college.
With continued support from generous individuals, families and businesses, the fund aims to help many more area students achieve their educational dreams. To ensure that continued support, the Yavapai College Foundation (YCF) is working to heighten awareness of the Education Now! Fund and the critical need for the scholarships it provides.
“This is the scholarship -- a robust bridge program for our Yavapai County students,” YC Vice President of Advancement Steve Walker said of the fund endowed in 2007 by the Blanch T. and Maurice Fleishman Foundation. Education Now! Fund scholarships are strictly for Yavapai County high school students with a demonstrated financial need and an interest in any of YC’s dozens of degree and certificate programs, Walker added.
Underscoring the need for scholarships in Yavapai County are statistics like these:
- About 1 in 5 Yavapai County resident lives below the federal poverty level
- More than four in 10 Yavapai county high school students are eligible for free and reduced-priced lunches
- 65-percent of Yavapai College students need financial aid
- 25-percent of Yavapai College students are the first in their families to attend college
