Comedy fans are in for a treat when Emmy Award-winning actress and comedian Vicki Lawrence takes the stage at the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center for Vicki Lawrence & Mama: A Two-Woman Show, Friday, August 22 at 7 p.m.
A legendary member of The Carol Burnett Show ensemble, Lawrence carved her place in television history with quick wit, impeccable timing, and the unforgettable character “Mama” Thelma Harper. What began as a sketch role for a 24-year-old newcomer blossomed into the hit sitcom Mama’s Family and a career that has spanned acting, comedy, and even a gold record with her 1973 chart-topper The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.
In her live show, Lawrence takes audiences on a ride through stand-up, music, and sharp observations on modern life - before handing things over to Mama, who has her own no-nonsense opinions and a fresh, hilarious take on today’s world.
“My show isn’t a look back,” Lawrence explains. “It’s part stand-up, part music, part Vicki - and then Mama arrives with brand new material that’s a little more modern and a little more unpredictable. She always manages to surprise me, and the audience.”
Audiences can expect the best of both worlds: the warmth and humor of Vicki Lawrence herself, plus the razor-sharp sass of her alter ego, Mama.
