Prescott, Arizona (Dec. 19, 2025) – The Yavapai College Police Department attended the 28th annual Shop with a Cop event on Sat. Dec. 13. This event pairs children with local police officers for a holiday shopping spree, aiming to build positive community relations, boost the children's self-esteem, and provide gifts for their families.
"I enjoy participating in the annual Shop with a Cop event as it allows me to build relationships with the children within our communities,” Yavapai College Police Department Detective Sergeant Megyn Felton said. “While the Yavapai College Police Department is community-based policing focused, the Shop with a Cop event allows me to spend one-on-one time with a child from our community and take pictures with Santa, eat breakfast, shop for presents and watch them enjoy the magic of the holidays. It is an honor to be able to be a part of these experiences with them.
The annual Shop with a Cop event is intended to boost children's self-esteem and morale while allowing them to see officers in a non-intimidating setting. It also provides an opportunity for children to experience the gift of giving—not only did each child shop for themselves; they likewise purchased gifts for their loved ones.
“It's a great event that all the members of our team enjoy attending. Getting to see those kids' faces light up, the thrill for them to ride in police vehicles with uniformed officers. I think they really get a kick out of it, and we certainly do too.” Yavapai College Police Chief Tyran Payne said. “It's important, especially for children, to understand that law enforcement officers are approachable, and I think this event does a great job in doing that.”
