Hybrid Course Design
Going hybrid is also simply going online MORE: how do you create engagement?
5 High Impact Teaching Strategies that Work Well with Hybrid
- Flipping the Classroom
- Put lectures online – just audio (with a transcript available) if that is easier. Make them short >7 min. The Fast Capture Studios in our Verde and Prescott Centers for Learning & Innovation (CLI) are available for making high quality video/audio content, and include a lightboard (CLI–Verde).
- Flipping content = make an assignment in response to the content prior to class meeting.
- Prioritize the best use of in-class time and keep those activities for days the class meets in person.
- Problem-Based Learning
- Project-Based Learning
- Community-Based Learning (including service-learning and experiential learning such as internships/clinicals)
- Learning Communities
Additional Strategies
- Use interactive video embedded in quizzes (combines instructional material with a practice activity/low-stakes assessment).
- Flip the discussion board (Christina).
- Poll students to ask for what they’d like to discuss in person.
- Share a roundup of the muddy points and successes.
- Offer optional synchronous Zoom meetings and online office hours.
