Yavapai College General Education Historical Awareness Courses

Historical Awareness Area Values

Historical Awareness area courses at Yavapai College reflect the values and guidelines for general education and, in addition, commit students and faculty to recognize and acknowledge the importance of:

  1. focusing on historical sequence to show the interconnectedness of ideas/events/themes/theories;
  2. using a historical context for the formation and operation of contemporary social institutions, in international relationships and other human arrangements;
  3. developing curiosity in the pursuit of historical knowledge and manifesting empathy in exploring the human condition.

Historical Awareness Courses Outcomes

Upon successful completion of study in historical awareness courses the learner will be able to:

  1. identify and interpret historical insights, themes and connections that are desirable and necessary for educated discourse;
  2. cultivate intellectual curiosity and employ the tools of scholarship (thoughtful nd precise writing, critical reading, critical thinking and intelligent oral discourse) to analyze, synthesize and evaluate the processes of cultural and/or social evolutions or developments;
  3. analyze the relationships between historical events and ideas in the context of the physical, social, cultural and/or economic environments;
  4. articulate the complexities that affect the shaping of history
