Streaming Media at YC

The college has a streaming media server available for faculty and staff. This allows online video and audio to be delivered more efficiently to the internet audience. The streaming media server current can stream Windows Media Video (.wmv) and Windows Media Audio (.wma).

TeLS can help prepare your media for streaming. Give us a call at 771-6120.

Yavapai College Follows Copyright & Fair Use Guidelines

Fair use doctrine allows for the use of copyrighted works for scholarship, including video and other media. While documents like this Fair Use Checklist are a good guide, the issue is complex and needs to be considered on a case by case basis. You can contact TeLS to get more information and discuss your needs, and consult our website Copyright & Fair Use at YC.

Using Streaming Media Management to Upload Media

Please note: To upload media yourself, you must first contact the TeLS office at 771-6120 to have a user account created. Then you can follow the steps below to upload.

How to Properly Name Your Media Files

First, it is very important to follow certain naming protocols, or you could corrupt your file and it will not upload properly.

  1. Do not put periods (.) or spaces in your media's file name, or special characters (!#$%^&*)
  2. Keep the filename to 40 characters or less.

How to Upload Your Media

Follow the four steps below:

  1. Log in at http://www.yc.edu/blackhawk using your YC user/password.
  2. Click on "Upload New Media"
    1. Enter a title (required)
    2. Enter a description (optional)
    3. Select the course ID that the media is related to. All current courses should be listed in the "Department/Course" drop-down menu. If not, select "OTHER" at the bottom of the list, and enter something indicative of the course or subject in the "Alternate Department/Course" field (No spaces in this name, whatever it is!!).
    4. Use the "Browse" button next to the "Media File" field to locate your movie file (No spaces in this name either, whatever it is!!)
    5. Leave "No" checked in the "Make Private" field
    6. Check one of the boxes next to "Copyright Status"
    7. Finish by clicking "Upload Media" at the bottom.
  3. When the file is uploaded, you will get a message saying that the upload was successful, along with a URL address such as this: http://comanche.yc.edu/play/?snayncs5kkVFlCRhMgQU. COPY THAT URL and paste it into a text file, and save it to a file as a record of your uploads.
  4. Lastly, paste the URL into your Blackboard course where you want students to access it. You can also email the link, add it to a blog or wiki, or use it however you use hyperlinks. Keep in mind that if you make it accessible on a public web space, you may be violating fair use doctrine if the content is not your own.

Here is a video tutorial about how best to add it to a Blackboard course.
