Raising A Reader Program
Yavapai College (YC) has been funded to implement the Raising A Reader program in the Yavapai Region. The program is an evidence-based parent education program that is consistent with First Things First Standards of Practice. Through the program, families are supported in their efforts to provide daily exposure to verbal and written language, providing children with opportunities to begin acquiring a basic understanding of the concepts of literacy and its functions.
In the third year of the program, we are continuing to implement all of the basic Raising A Reader (RAR) core program components. These include:
- Partnering with childcare providers to implement the program with center families;
- Training parents about simple book sharing techniques and read aloud skills;
- Utilizing an innovative book bag rotation system to expose children to numerous award-winning books; and
- Engaging libraries to support the ongoing access to books and reading.
Yavapai College maintains partnerships with child care providers who have implemented Raising A Reader (RAR). New child care providers and early childhood centers are always being recruited.
In 2013-2014, Yavapai College will serve approximately 500 children, 0 to 5 years of age, with early literacy education provided to 375 parents/adults.
