BroadwayOLLI Kicks off Lunchtime Brain Buzz Series

January 29, 2015
Details: Musicals have made many contributions to the great American Song Book. From Rodgers and Hammerstein to rock and roll show tunes have been imprinted on our collective memory. Many of these songs sound nostalgic or light when sung in concert, but within the context of the show have a much darker or different meaning. Some may remember one show for it's sheer romance and another for drugs and rock and roll, but both deal with problems surging through our society at the time and have surprising depth.
Come and listen to some music (via CD and video), discuss the lyrics and learn a little about this great art form that was America's gift to the world. We will just get a brief taste of these shows and songs, but as they say in show biz, "Always leave them wanting more!"
James Scheid has been a proud audience member of over 200 productions in New York alone and is an experienced OLLI facilitator. He has held classes each week a different topic will be presented in a new and interesting way. Topics for the coming weeks include – Gloria Steinem and the women’s movement, equal temperament in music, Lincoln and Gettysburg, and Tesla – the man, now a car.
Water, Coffee and Iced Tea will be provided. Bring a "brown bag" lunch or get something from the college café.
Time: 12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.
FREE and Open to the Public.
Location: Yavapai College; 601 Black Hills Dr. G-104,

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

James Perey

Recently, someone posted on the YC Facebook page, challenging the YC Deans to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. James Perey accepted and did it on the Verde Valley Campus on Wednesday, September 3rd on the grassy knoll.

A Verde Valley Campus student, Angel Gutierrez, volunteered to do the honors.

The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someone's head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research.

The challenge dares nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and then nominating others to do the same. A common stipulation is that nominated participants have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a charitable financial donation.
