Hannah Shelley's Story of Strength

Hannah ShelleyNever in my lifetime did I imagine getting a college degree. I received an Associates of Arts with honors in May and could not be more proud. This accomplishment gives me encouragement and strength to continue toward my educational goals at Northern Arizona University.

I have been a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society since 2010. Serving through Phi Theta Kappa has strengthened my leadership skills and so much more. Every year I volunteer at Mitzvah Day for the Verde Valley area, to be a part of my community. I also give as much time to my daughter’s school as possible. Helping the teachers there who helped me become who I am today is the most rewarding.

The college selected me to be the student speaker at my Commencement Ceremony. This was a great honor and my first time speaking for a large audience. My experience at Yavapai College gave me the courage to do this. Participating at the ILEP Conference (International Leaders in Education Program) gave me great exposure to education around the world. This involvement was in thanks to Yavapai College because they gave me multiple opportunities to deepen my educational experience.

As a single mother without much education, working toward my degree has not been easy, but the effort has made me a better citizen and enhanced my self-esteem. I did not think it was possible but tried anyhow. Sticking with it when I did not have an ounce of anything left to give made me feel more capable and dedicated. It felt like a dream when I received my diploma. I had finally graduated, and the feeling of success meant more than anything.

Without the support of my classmates and faculty, I could not have done this. There are great people at Yavapai College who can and will change your life. Yavapai College has shown me that anything is possible. Yavapai College has been a life-changing experience for my family and me. Without the caring faculty at Yavapai College, the school would not be the extraordinary place it is, leading its students toward success.

Being a student at Yavapai College has helped me grow as a person and a student. My experiences there confirm that it’s a great college.
