Led by an honor guard, heralded by a bagpipe, Yavapai College’s Spring 2026 Fire Academy Class graduated on Friday, May 1, 2026 at the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center. Class 26-01 brought 18 new firefighters into the community.

“Today, we gather to celebrate an extraordinary group of individuals-our fire science academy graduates,” said Dr. Lisa Rhine, Yavapai College President. “You’ve poured your energy, your intellect, and your hearts into this journey. And today, we recognize you not only for what you’ve achieved, but for who you are: courageous, highly skilled, unshakable professionals. So, to our newest firefighters: we salute your strength, your discipline, your courage and your heart.”

Fire Academy Director Robert Borker thanked families for their ongoing support and praised the eighteen graduates for their perseverance in a program that demands much more than study. “This program requires commitment well beyond the classroom,” Borker said. “The support of families makes a tremendous difference, and these eighteen graduates demonstrated extraordinary perseverance throughout the academy.”

Graduate Fire Cadet Thurman O'Herlihy reflected on the challenges and growth during the program. “We learned valuable skills and pushed ourselves beyond what we though what we could do” O'Herlihy said. “We ended up on a journey that made us tougher, fitter, and more capable. I want to express gratitude for my fellow classmates who fostered an atmosphere of camaraderie and passion for learning throughout this academy. We encouraged one another and held each other to high standards.”

Keynote speaker Captain Jeremiah King of Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) emphasized the calling of the fire service. “This mission is selfless, to save lives and protect property. Being a firefighter is not just a job. It is a commitment to serve others, often on their worst day.”
