The Yavapai Symphony launches 2023 with a Grammy-winning ensemble, a virtuoso violinist and two of classical music’s most cherished composers. Join us as the YSA welcomes the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, with special guest violinist Renaud Capuçon, performing a program of Prokofiev and Mussorgsky, Wednesday, January 18 at 7 p.m. at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center in Prescott.

Now entering its fifty-first year, The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra has grown from a daring collective of talented freelance musicians to a global force in classical music, with a reputation stretching far and wide from its Carnegie Hall home. Taking a chamber music approach to their music – tightly interconnected performances and an open, democratic leadership – the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra quickly became a global sensation, recording more than 70 albums and winning a 2002 Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance.

“Playing with perfect unanimity, their performances have polish and spirit, and display an infectious love for making music.”

RenaudYSA’s Prescott performance also features renowned French violinist Renaud Capuçon. Known worldwide for his poise, depth of tone and virtuosity, Capuçon is a favored soloist with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. The Chambéry-born graduate of Paris’s Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique performs with leading orchestras all over the world, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Vienna Philharmonic (VPO), the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Filarmonica della Scala, the Boston Symphony, and the New York Philharmonic.

Capuçon and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra will perform a program of Prokofiev and Mussgorsky pieces, including the latter’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Modest Mussorgsky composed the ten interrelated piano suites in 1874, inspired by the work and life of Russian artist Viktor Hartmann, a close friend who had died the previous year. Originally composed as a piano work, Pictures at an Exhibition became a favorite of contemporary pianists before multiple orchestral adaptations made it a popular ensemble piece.

The concert will be held at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center, 1100 E. Sheldon Street, in Prescott. Tickets for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra are $45 to $65, and only available by contacting the Yavapai Symphony Association at (928) 776.4255.
