The Yavapai College Police Department (YCPD) started the new year by welcoming two certified peace officers. Officers Michael Rodgers and Arturo Gomez were officially sworn in by Yavapai College President Dr. Lisa Rhine during a January 7 ceremony attended by the Executive Leadership Team and the YCPD family.

Both officers described the experience as unique and meaningful. “Having the president of the college swear us in made us feel honored,” they agreed, noting the warm welcome they received from the YC community.

"We are very proud to welcome Officer's Rodgers and Gomez to the Yavapai College Police Department," said Chief Tyan Payne. "Their skills, dedication, and commitment to service and community strengthen our department. Our team works hard every day to create a safe and secure environment across all seven YC campuses, enhancing the educational experience while providing assistance and protection for our students, faculty, and staff."

Officer Arturo Gomez’s journey to law enforcement began on YC’s own soccer fields. A former Roughrider soccer player in 2017, Gomez later joined YCPD as a police aide before graduating from the Northern Arizona Regional Training Academy (NARTA) at Yavapai College in December 2025.

“Helping the public has been a lifelong dream of mine, and now that dream is accomplished thanks to YCPD and President Dr. Lisa Rhine” Gomez said. “I grew up playing soccer with Chief Tyran Payne’s sons, and my first interaction with a police officer was with Chief Payne. He made me feel safe and inspired me to become a peace officer.” Gomez plans to continue his education at YC, pursuing an associate degree in Administration of Justice.

Officer Michael Rodgers brings more than two decades of law enforcement experience to YCPD.

Originally from New York and an Arizona State University graduate with bachelor’s degrees in Italian and Justice Studies, Rodgers joined the department in August 2025 after serving with multiple Arizona agencies. “I enjoy the environment, camaraderie, communication, and engagement within the YC community,” Rodgers said. He shared that he was considering leaving policing altogether before an opportunity with YCPD opened. “The people I talked to here made me want to continue my career,” he said. Rodgers also enjoys bicycle patrol and the opportunity to
serve across YC’s seven locations.

Detective Sergeant Megyn Felton praised the new additions, noting that both officers bring valuable
skills and community connections. They’re both qualified translators, Rodgers in Italian and Gomez
in Spanish. “They bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and relationships within our
communities to the department,” Felton said. “We’re very lucky.”

Yavapai College operates seven campuses and centers throughout Yavapai County and
offers over 100 degrees and certificates, four baccalaureate degrees, student and
community services, and cultural events and activities.
