Prescott, Arizona — In August of 2025, the Yavapai Baseball team took on a fresh look when Marc MacMillan was hired as the new head coach. After coaching stints with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) schools such as Charleston Southern University and the University of Mississippi, Coach MacMillan admired and respected Yavapai College from afar– until now.
A graduate of both the University of Mississippi and Canisius University, MacMillan became familiar with Yavapai College in 2009, specifically the many accomplishments of its baseball program, who had won three National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Baseball Championships up to that point. When he received the call that he would be the eighth Yavapai Baseball Head Coach, MacMillan rushed to Prescott with his family to take advantage of this new opportunity.
“I was hopeful of finding a place that had supportive leadership, a commitment to excellence, open lines of communication, and a sincere sense of family,” MacMillan states. “Athletic Director Tim Kneip has displayed all these qualities – making my family and I feel welcomed and supported from day one.”
MacMillan being the head of all aspects of the baseball program, views his role as not just a coach, but as a teacher that fosters excellence and personal development, similar to a professor in the classroom. He feels responsible for creating a system that generates discipline and teamwork, traits that are generally common between working on the baseball field as well as academics.
“Athletics is an extension of the classroom, providing our student-athletes with opportunities to learn valuable life lessons,” said MacMillan. His coaching philosophy centers on developing character, building resilience, and preparing student-athletes for success beyond their time at Yavapai College.
MacMillan has the rare skill of being able to curate talent and send players into great situations, including Major League Baseball. His experiences have allowed him to grow as a leader and mentor, such as seeing his former and current players build confidence and achieving their goals, which in turn has been a rewarding experience for Coach.
While being a Baseball coach has its perks, there are often challenging moments that someone in this profession is quite accustomed to. MacMillan sets high expectations and living up to them can sometimes be difficult. However, MacMillan has a way of spinning the negative into a positive tale of hope. “Challenges create opportunities for growth, so I choose to view them as experiences I ‘get to’ embrace while working to find a way for the outcome desired,” he said.
In his short time here, Marc MacMillan has excelled in his leadership of the program and its members, including an overall enhancement in development and defining culture. Whether within the confines of Roughrider Park or the broader word of academia, Marc has his eyes set on the true prize: helping his athletes grow and succeed.
