Prescott, Arizona — Members of the public are invited to observe Constitution Day and Citizenship Day on Thu. Sep. 17 at Yavapai College’s Boyd Tenney Library in the Center for Learning for Innovation in Building 19 of the Prescott campus from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Yavapai College is taking the opportunity to simultaneously recognize and celebrate 50 years serving the people of Yavapai County by making government documents available and accessible, free of charge and without impediments, to the public, as part of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).

“That Yavapai College has for so many years participated in this important program is another observable example of how deep and wide the roots of this institution run throughout the community,” said Yavapai College Acting President Dr. Doug Berry. “We’re proud to have shared in providing access to information and documents that started more than 160 years ago.”

Light celebratory refreshments will be served, giveaway branded items, and information about the Constitution will be available.

The FDLP has been part of the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) since 1895, providing government information to libraries serving the need of people across the nation for information by and about their federal government.

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is a federal observance celebrated annually on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787 and to honor all U.S. citizens.

• Purpose and Significance: Commemorates History: Marks the final session of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia when delegates signed the supreme law of the land.
• Honors Citizenship: Recognizes people who have become U.S. citizens through naturalization or by reaching voting age.
• Promotes Civic Education: Encourages Americans to learn about civic duties, rights, and the structure of the government.
• Observance and Activities: Constitution Week: September 17 through September 23 marks Constitution Week, a time for deeper reflection on what it means to be a U.S. citizen.
• Schools and Federal Agencies: Schools receiving federal funding are required to hold educational programs about the U.S. Constitution.
• Naturalization Ceremonies: Many courts and organizations host special ceremonies welcoming new citizens into the country.
