Workplace Violence: Definition & Prevention
Yavapai College is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for employees, students, and visitors. Violent or threatening behavior of any kind will not be tolerated and will be addressed promptly and appropriately.
What Is Workplace Violence?
Workplace violence includes any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or disruptive behavior in a work-related setting. This may involve employees, students, visitors, contractors, or anyone present in college facilities. It can range from verbal abuse to physical assault.
Under workplace safety laws, employers must provide an environment free from recognized hazards that could cause harm, including those related to workplace violence.
Types of Workplace Violence
- Verbal threats or aggressive language
- Intimidation or bullying behavior
- Physical assault or unwanted physical contact
- Threats involving weapons or implied harm
- Harassment that creates fear or unsafe conditions
Why It Matters
Workplace violence can result in serious consequences, including:
- Physical injury or trauma
- Psychological stress, anxiety, or emotional harm
- Reduced morale and productivity
- Increased absenteeism and workplace disruption
Prevention Program Elements
Yavapai College maintains a proactive prevention program focused on identifying risks and promoting safety through ongoing assessment and reporting procedures.
Risk Assessment & Hazard Identification
Risk Management regularly reviews workplace environments to identify and reduce potential hazards that could contribute to violent incidents.
Reporting Procedures
Employees and students are encouraged to report threats, concerning behavior, or unsafe situations immediately. Reports are handled confidentially and investigated thoroughly.
How to Report a Concern
If you observe or experience any of the following:
- Threats or acts of violence
- Intimidation, bullying, or harassment
- Unsafe or concerning behavior
